Closed list proportional representation

No Comments on Closed list proportional representation

The closed list proportional representation electoral system is used to elect members of the National Assembly. This system requires that, before an election, each political party must put forward a list of candidates (ranked in order of preference). These lists are then submitted to the Electoral Commission by the political parties when they register for the election. The voters will then vote for their political party of choice (and not the individual candidates). Each party will then be allocated a number of seats in proportion to the number of votes that that party received.
For example, if political party A receives 50% of the votes in the election, then they will receive 200 seats out of the possible 400 seats in the National Assembly. The first 200 names on the list that was submitted will then qualify as members of the National Assembly.
